Dr. Sarah Schecter, Head of Lower School

September 26, 2025
Dear Lower School Parents,
Most Fridays I eat lunch with a group of twelve Lower School students. Each homeroom teacher selects a student to sit at the Head Table. Recently I enjoyed the company of a fine group of students who were selected because they are flexible. It was interesting to figure out in the course of conversation that all of them are the youngest in their families. We had a good talk about why the youngest people in families might be more flexible than others. It was an insightful conversation. It is always a joy to be with your children.
Yesterday we were honored to enjoy some beautiful music from our friends at the Van Cliburn Foundation. Students learned about the life of Van Cliburn, a local hero, who inspired several generations of musicians. We were especially impressed with the pianist who awed all of us with her talent in performing several difficult compositions that were Van Cliburn’s favorites. The camera gave all of us a bird’s eye view of her fingers moving quickly and accurately across the keyboard. It was an inspiring program.
Photos of Let Grow projects have started to come in. While participation is optional, this grading period project is due the first week after Fall Break.
Next week, September 29 - October 3, is Homecoming Spirit Week. We have a full week of fun dress up days and an early out day on Friday after the parade. Click here to view the daily themes and the schedule of events. We invite you to join us on October 3 at 10:00 a.m. for the annual Homecoming Parade and hope that you will come back to the O.A.C. (Oakridge Athletic Complex across the street) for the football game that evening.
Sincerely,
Sarah Schecter
Head of Lower School
